Talking Overachiever with MUA Joey Maalouf
Where Molly Sims glows, Joey Maalouf follows… with a powder puff and a high-shine gloss in hand. And though our founder attributes her skin journey to her personal discoveries (which ultimately led us here, of course), her signature lip and flawlessly blended contour don’t just appear out of thin air.
Joey Maalouf – celebrity makeup artist tending to faces like Goldie Hawn, Lisa Rinna, Rachel Zoe and beyond – is the master at work. And with such esteemed clientele like our very own Molly Sims, Joey has no choice but to be right on schedule with them.
The Overachiever Eye Patches are no new arrival for Joey – in fact, he and Molly have been testing eye masks since her first time in his makeup chair almost 20 years ago (yes, time flies… don’t remind us). Flash forward to today, and the Overachiever has hit the market with more than just a chic pattern to share. Safe to say, they’re the only patches to pass the full glam test for routine multitaskers like him.
In the realm of makeup, skin prep is everything. And with years of expertise, Joey’s picks and professional tips are topped with a shiny gold seal. Read more on our conversation with Joey learning how The Overachiever hit regular status in his kit, and what overachieving looks like in a world that never seems to slow down.
YB: As a makeup artist, eye patches seem to be a non-negotiable step to a full faced look. Can you tell us the purpose they serve in the getting ready process, specifically regarding how products interact with the skin?
JM: I often depend on under-eye patches as a simple trick. They are quick, feel good, and are usually quite effective. It's wild how there's a noticeable difference after just 15 minutes; eyes look less puffy, and fine lines appear softer which creates a great base for makeup.
YB: You’ve worked with Molly for years now, testing endless products along the way (including a multitude of patches!). After playing around with almost every other mask on the market… what sets the Overachiever apart from the rest?
JM: They brighten, they smooth, firm, hydrate, stimulate collagen production, and the Allantoin soothes irritation and calms redness. Plus, they won't slip off, which is a big plus for me.
YB: Your clients are no stranger to the makeup chair, and repetition means for a well-oiled machine. From application to removal, where do you insert The Overachiever in your step-by-step glam routine?
JM: The Overachiever creates a great base for concealers. I like to use them as my first step to help improve the longevity of the makeup. They can also be used after makeup removal to soothe and rejuvenate the under eyes.
YB: The Overachiever Eye Patches are the epitome of on-the-go skincare, which for people like us, could mean anywhere. What are your favorite moments you’ve personally been caught overachieving?
JM: When I walk my dogs in the morning, people will say, "OMG, your dogs are so cute!" Then they look up at me and ask, "Oh, what are those on your eyes?" They’re The Overachiever by YSE Beauty, of course.
YB: How would you describe being an Overachiever in this day and age?
JM: I believe overachievers understand that they can't do everything alone. It truly takes a village. There's no prize for doing the most, but if you can thrive under pressure, welcome it, embrace it, and use it to your advantage, then you better work, Miss Thing! Ultimately, it comes down to recognizing your weaknesses and being excited about turning them into strengths, while also surrounding yourself with people who lift you up.
YB: Tell us about the last time you felt like an Overachiever.
JM: I'm not sure whether I qualify as an overachiever, but I did hike Kilimanjaro and run the Los Angeles Marathon within a few months of each other. Does that count?
YB: On a normal day in Joey’s life, where does the Overachiever fit into your busy routine?
JM: In the morning, I start my day with a 20-minute meditation to set a positive tone for the day. While sipping my coffee, I check and respond to important emails. I like to apply my Overachiever eye patches and take my dogs for a morning walk to get some fresh air while the eye patches work their magic. When I return, I prepare my makeup kit for work and head to my first client. In the afternoon, I teach makeup lessons via Zoom. By 4pm, I’m typically taking a yoga class to decompress. On nights when I don't have plans, I enjoy cooking dinner by 7pm and then read in bed by 9pm. On nights I go out or have events, I'll apply the Overachiever patches a second time, while getting ready to look extra refreshed.
Joey Maalouf will be the first to say that good makeup relies on good skin – and a healthy, hydrated base is always step number one.
Step two? A little mascara and a good red lip. Duh.
